Golden Fox Fupa: A New Craftsmanship Challenge

Golden Fox Fupa: A New Craftsmanship Challenge

If you are familiar with premium Japanese Kumano fude (makeup brushes) from Hiroshima, the Fupa series needs no introduction. It is one of the most iconic and milestone product lines from KOYUDO, a brand well-regarded in the traditional Kumano brush-making community.

The name "Fupa" comes from a simple combination of two Japanese words: "Fude" (brush) and "Paffu" (powder puff). KOYUDO’s concept was straightforward: to design a brush that feels as soft and plush as a powder puff, while keeping the precision and control of a traditional makeup brush.

Over the years, KOYUDO has released different versions of the Fupa using premium natural hairs, such as Saikoho Goat, Sokoho Goat, Gray Squirrel, and Dyed Silver Fox. Each hair type brought its own unique character to the shape, earning a loyal following among fude collectors.

Now, a new member has joined the family: the Golden Fox Fupa.

This marks KOYUDO's first time using premium Golden Fox hair for the classic Fupa shape. To be honest, it was quite an unconventional and challenging move. Driven by curiosity, we wanted to see how a Fupa made from resilient Golden Fox hair would perform, and how it would be received by the community.

What Exactly is Golden Fox Hair?

A common question people ask when they first hear about Golden Fox is: Is this a rare, entirely different species of fox?

Not at all. Biologically, both Golden Fox and Red Fox come from the exact same Red Fox species. The difference isn't about the animal's genetics—it comes down to the selection process and artisanal standards.

In high-end Kumano fude making, natural hair is graded by more than just the animal type; the fineness and texture of the fibers are the core factors.

Golden Fox refers to a carefully selected premium grade of hair, sorted from quality winter coats. Craftsmen choose specific sections of the pelt where the hair shafts are mature, the tips are exceptionally delicate, and the resilience is highly consistent.

💡 To compare it with goat hair grading: The relationship between Golden Fox and standard Red Fox is quite similar to the distinction between Saibikoho and regular Saikoho goat hair.

They share the same origin, but the rigorous selection process leads to a noticeable difference in texture and performance. This is why many fude lovers notice right away that Golden Fox feels smoother on the skin while offering a more stable, reliable bounce compared to standard Red Fox.

Of course, Golden Fox isn't meant to replace Red Fox; both have their own appeal. Red Fox is loved for its cloud-like, airy softness. Golden Fox, on the other hand, maintains that silky feel while offering a balanced combination of softness, structural support, and powder control. This unique balance is exactly why Yoshiki (KOYUDO's master craftsman) felt it was a material worth trying for the dense Fupa shape.

The Craftsmanship Behind the Brush

Selecting the right hair is only the first step; shaping Golden Fox into a proper Fupa proved to be a real technical challenge.

To preserve the natural "micro-wave crimp" of the hair and ensure it blooms beautifully after washing, Yoshiki chose to avoid harsh chemical degreasing, which can damage the hair cuticles and cause a scratchy texture. Instead, they relied on a slow, gentle, and natural conditioning process.

In Kumano, this involves traditional techniques like "Hi-ire" (heat conditioning) and "Ke-momi" (manual hair massaging with ash). Craftsmen use their experience and careful temperature control to bring out the natural elasticity of the hair shafts.

Even after conditioning, shaping the hair into a Fupa is difficult because the fibers are naturally very active.

Golden Fox fibers are sleek and have a strong, natural spring. When artisans place them into the traditional wooden shaping molds (Ki-gata), the hair resists being tightly compressed. Instead of staying in place, the fibers tend to push outward, making it hard to achieve the dense, perfectly rounded silhouette of a Fupa.

Yoshiki mentioned that during the early prototype stages, the team thought they were on the right track, but the finished brush heads came out uneven.

"The surface looked a bit like the craters on the moon," Yoshiki recalled.

To fix this, the team spent months adjusting variables like hair density, fiber direction, length distribution, and mold pressure. The current Golden Fox Fupa is the result of patience and traditional skill working with a highly challenging material.

A Focused Approach to Craftsmanship

When asked why they decided to pursue such a difficult project, Yoshiki’s perspective was insightful:

“We didn't create the Golden Fox Fupa just to add another product to the lineup. I wanted to see if Golden Fox could bring something new to the Fupa concept using traditional Kumano methods.”

This project was less about standard product development and more about exploring the limits of the craft. While the Golden Fox Fupa might not be a mass-market bestseller, it is definitely one of the most unique creations in KOYUDO's collection.

Large vs. Small: A Practical Guide

The Golden Fox Fupa comes in two sizes, Large and Small. Both offer the same premium feel, so you can choose based on your daily makeup routine:

👑 Large (All-Over Setting Powder & Blending)

If you prefer an efficient and seamless powder application, the Large size is a great choice. Its broad surface area lets you apply loose powder or powder foundation quickly. It is also excellent for sweeping bronzer or blending out product across larger areas of the face. It diffuses edges beautifully for a soft, natural finish without leaving harsh lines, giving the skin a fresh, clean look.

🎯 Small (Detailed Powder Application & Precision)

If you like precise control over your makeup placement, the Small size is ideal. It works perfectly for setting the under-eye area, dusting around the nose and smile lines, or placing blush and highlighter exactly where you want it. For targeted application or for anyone worried about applying too much product at once, the Small size offers great predictability and control.

A Note for Fude Enthusiasts

The Golden Fox Fupa isn't a brush designed for flashy visual trends; it is a thoughtful piece made for those who truly appreciate brush craftsmanship. It focuses its attention on material quality, traditional techniques, and how the bristles perform over time.

If you are just looking for a basic, everyday powder brush, this may not be the most budget-friendly choice. But if you enjoy exploring the subtle differences in tactile feel between premium natural hairs, and appreciate the traditional methods that Kumano artisans continue to practice, the Golden Fox Fupa is a highly rewarding experience.

A genuinely good brush doesn't just need to impress you on day one; its true value shows after years of regular use, when it remains the brush you naturally reach for each morning.

The appeal of the Golden Fox Fupa lies in the dedication behind it. In an industry that often prioritizes speed and mass production, it is refreshing to see traditional artisans spend months refining a classic shape with a challenging new material. This commitment to exploring new possibilities is exactly what makes Kumano fude so fascinating to makeup enthusiasts around the world.
