Bunshindo is a small artisan workshop that continues to create makeup brushes using traditional techniques originally developed for handcrafted Japanese calligraphy brushes.
Every step is completed by hand, beginning with the careful selection, sorting, and preparation of the hair. More than 20 individual processes are required before each brush is finished. Every piece is created with the same patience, precision, and attention to detail as a work of art.
Because of this highly labor-intensive production method, Bunshindo is unable to manufacture its brushes on a large scale. Each brush is individually handcrafted to order by skilled artisans.
After experiencing Bunshindo’s extraordinary craftsmanship firsthand, we began exploring new possibilities for brush design. This process eventually led to the creation of our new Kolinsky and red fox blend stippling brush, featuring a subtly staggered hair arrangement.
We learned that red fox hair gradually loses resilience as the fibers become longer. Although long red fox hair can look exceptionally beautiful, it may become less practical and more prone to spreading outward during use.
After considering Bunshindo’s standard ferrule widths of 16.5mm and 19mm, we selected the more compact 16.5mm width as the foundation for this design.
The brush is built around 30mm Kolinsky hair, which provides the structure, resilience, and responsive spring needed for controlled application. Red fox hairs measuring approximately 2–3mm longer than the Kolinsky fibers are then carefully arranged within the spaces between them.
This construction allows the Kolinsky hair to support and control the softer red fox fibers, helping to prevent them from spreading outward. At the same time, the red fox hair softens the overall sensation against the skin.
The result is a brush that feels exceptionally soft and plush, yet remains resilient and controlled, with a light, airy movement across the skin.
